I’ll be there on Saturday too!

There’s kinda a mini-Tumblr meet up, honestly.  I’m going with three or four folks on here.  I’ll find you ;)

Not a fan of Toure’? Me neither.

Why does it bother you?

It’s not so much that I have a personal problem with Touré.  I don’t really vibe with his personality, but he has an expertise and is a decent writer.  I just don’t know what makes him qualified to be a prominent political commentator.

And this isn’t me saying that everyone that’s on television pontificating about politics needs to be a trained political scientist.  I would NEVER suggest something like that.  But it is to say that all too often, when women and people of color are put on television to become political commentators, particularly when they’re set up to be the spokesperson for their particular demographic, they’ve often done nothing in their life to suggest they’re qualified to play that role.  Anyone can talk about politics, sure, but if you’re going to be presented as an expert of some sort, one should have spent some time developing expertise.  There’s just nothing about Touré’s background that suggests to me that he’s a viable voice in that manner.

There are just better qualified folks to play the role MSNBC has asked him to play, but more than that, it’s a pathology that kinda persists in this type of media entertainment.
